100+ Shelters Installed at Bus Stops This Year

September 16, 2009 - Tampa, Florida - Shelter from the rain, wind and sun has just gotten a lot easier for people who use HART bus services. That's because so far in fiscal year 2009, HART has installed more than 100 new shelters at its bus stops throughout the county.

Ads Fund New, Improved Shelters
In 2008, HART entered into a contract with Signal Outdoor Advertising in Orlando to install a number of new bus shelters and retrofit many others to accept advertising. This year, Signal Outdoor has placed shelters at 55 new locations in the City of Tampa and Hillsborough County. The contract requires Signal Outdoor to provide continuing maintenance of the shelters at no additional cost to HART.

HART has also installed an additional 36 shelters around the area, while a number of developers have provided 13 shelters at stops near their properties. In all, a total of 104 new shelters have been installed this year, the most ever placed in a single year by HART.

"We're pleased to be able to provide so many new shelters for our customers," said Temple Terrace Councilman Ron Govin, HART's Board Chair. "This is an example of a public-private partnership working to the benefit of the community, and it's also a testament to HART's commitment to make our service the absolute best it can be."

More to Come
Many of the shelters were placed in some of the most-traveled transit corridors, including Nebraska Avenue, Hillsborough Avenue and Dale Mabry. Another 17 shelters were added in the unincorporated areas of Hillsborough County, including Brandon Boulevard and Boyette Road.

In the coming months, almost 50 more shelters will be built on Kennedy Boulevard, Fowler Avenue, Causeway Boulevard, 40th Street, Nebraska Avenue, Hillsborough Avenue, Busch Boulevard and US 301.
