HART Capital projects - TECO LIne Streetcar Extension to Whiting St.

In December 2010, HART completed the .3 mile extension of the TECO Line Streetcar System into Downtown Tampa at Whiting Street. Over a two-year period, the project created jobs from designing the station, to laying track and handling the overhead catenary wire. The extension to Whiting Street was completed by HART ahead of schedule and under budget.

Economic Development of the TECO Line Streetcar System
-
Previous Line: Extensive development has occurred along the original 2.4 mile streetcar line since it opened in 2002. The development includes new hotels in Ybor City (historic district) and the Convention Center area, as well as large residential condominium projects in Channelside and Ybor City. A major entertainment development project at Channelside was constructed. In addition, museums, art venues and restaurants are served by the line.
-
Extension: The extension of the streetcar connects the Convention Center (as well as residential, entertainment and hotel facilities in Ybor City and Channelside) to the core of downtown Tampa (business district).
-
CAMLS: The University of South Florida Center for Advanced Medical Learning (CAMLS) is a major project that has opened up adjacent to the new Whiting Streetcar Station. This $30 million world-class facility, will bring doctors for research and advanced surgery techniques. The extension provides direct service to CAMLS, providing it with access to adjacent hotels and entertainment facilities. USF is considered one of the top three research universities in the state.
-
Special Events: The streetcar is very effective during special events, safely transporting residents and visitors from six public parking garages, as well as dozens of private parking areas/facilities to Ybor City, Channelside and Downtown Tampa. For instance, the average Saturday ridership for the streetcar is approximately 2,600, but consider the spike for special events and holidays: Super Bowl XLIII (weekend) 46,515 Gasparilla 2010: 14,340 New Year’s Eve 2010: 7,904
